08 - Trip Through Your Wires

Bono scrisse questa canzone in meno di un’ora. Ammise che Trip Through Your Wires non è complete senza l’accostamento a The Sweetest Thing, il brano dedicato a Ali per scusarsi di aver dimenticato il suo compleanno. Probabilmente il pezzo è quindi indirizzato alla moglie in un momento molto particolare, ma lo stesso Bono rimarrà vago: «Trip Through Your Wires nacque da una chiacchierata telefonica con qualcuno che si rivelò tutt’altra persona. Giocai un po’ su questa ambiguità».

Il risultato è un divertissement, un pezzo aperto dall’armonica a bocca, in cui si narra un patimento amoroso in cui la donna assume sembianze ambigue:

Tra le righe il cantante segue il corso del brano tratto dal Vangelo di Matteo:

In Inglese:

In Italiano:

“35Perché io ho avuto fame e mi avete dato da mangiare, ho avuto sete e mi avete dato da bere; ero forestiero e mi avete ospitato, 36nudo e mi avete vestito, malato e mi avete visitato, carcerato e siete venuti a trovarmi.” (Mt 25, 35-36)

La canzone si avvia alla fine replicando la scena iniziale, mentre sullo sfondo stanno per scatenarsi gli elementi della natura:
